GTMcraft Plays · The quote and credit logic play

Discount rules and deal credit live in your team's heads, so margin and win rate erode every quarter with no one able to prove why; write the logic down and put the deal desk in charge of the answer, not the loudest voice in the room.

The 90-second read

Discount rules and deal credit live in people's heads at most revenue teams. Every quarter the same fight returns: why was this deal fifteen percent off, and who gets the credit for it. Nobody wrote the rule down, so the loudest voice in the room decides it again. Meanwhile the discounting quietly drags down win rate and margin, and nobody can trace the exact cause. Jeff Ignacio names the root cause directly: RevOps owns the outcome of the quote without owning the logic behind it. Write the quote logic and the credit rules once, and the deal desk runs on rules, not on memory.

Read time: about 5 minutes. First step runnable Monday morning.

The #1 move this week

Pull your last 30 discounted deals. For each one, write the real reason the discount was given, not the reason on the approval form. The three to five reasons that keep repeating are your undocumented quote logic. Write them into one rule set this week, before the next QBR argument starts.

Start here: pull 30 closed-won deals with a discount, and the CRM or deal-desk log that shows the approved percentage.

Ignore this week: the full CPQ rebuild, the new pricing tiers, and the territory-comp rewrite. This is one rule set, not a systems project.
