GTMcraft Plays · The Signal Pairing Play

Your reps chase the same job posts and funding news every competitor sees; pair each outside signal with a record only you hold, and kill any pairing that cannot beat your baseline in a quarter.

The 90-second read

Third-party signals used to feel like an edge. Funding rounds, job posts, new hires, tech changes. Today every competitor buys the same feed, so the same accounts get the same email on the same day. Kyle Poyar calls it an arms race that turned his old standby signals into a commodity. The edge moved to the other half of the pair: your own records. A champion who loved your product, a lost deal with a written reason, a buying group already on your pricing page, five users on free accounts inside one target company. The rule in this play is simple. No outside signal fires alone. Each one is joined to a record only you hold, and each pairing runs like a channel with a kill date.

The #1 move this week

Pull your closed-lost deals from the last 18 months and sort them by loss reason.

Only about one in four qualified opportunities becomes a customer, so the other three already know you. Most of them lost on timing, budget, or priority, and all three can change. A generic nine-month reminder never catches the change. A loss reason paired with the right outside trigger does.

Start here: export closed-lost opportunities with loss reason, amount, and last contact, and tag each reason as timing, budget, priority, or product.

Ignore this week: do not buy a new intent feed. Your own records are the scarce half of every pair, and you already own them.
